The Making of the

Music Video "Mirror"

"Mirror" is about rediscovering the real you—

getting back to who you really are.  The joy that you knew in childhood, combined with the uncertainty

…which only makes things more interesting, more alive!

The simple joys in life—kicking off your heels,

climbing up on the counter and eating Oreos at midnight.

Waiting for your prince to come, but relishing the anticipation.

Enjoying life shared with friends, but finding strength in your own self.

Looking in the mirror and seeing yourself as you really are—

a composite of everyone and everything...

Sharing stories, photo album of the past
Learning more about you through every tear and every laugh
You seem so shy and so ashamed to cry
I know you're very scared cause I can see it in your eyes

You’re vulnerable when it comes to letting go
You’re good at keeping secrets locked up buried in your soul
You fall too fast without a net below
And you always take a chance because it's all that you know

Mirror, mirror on the wall
Tell me why I feel so small
Don’t you know me anymore?
It’s just me I’m looking for
Mirror, mirror on the wall
Tell me why I feel so small
Don’t you know me anymore?
It’s just me I’m looking for

And I know I love midnight snacks
And hate to be alone
I want him to hang up last
And music is my soul
I love to take long showers
And dance like no one sees
Drink coffee any hour
Think shopping cures all things
I’m a hopeless romantic
Waiting for my prince to come
My life’s a beautiful tragedy
And it's all because of love

Diary... Day One

8:00 a.m. Getting ready to shoot our first scene.  Driving down the freeway in a classic car...with a camera two feet from my face and the director in the backseat.  No seatbelts.  Driving 45 mph in the fast lane so that they can get the shot.

"Can you look more at the camera to your right, Zoe?"  Are they kidding me?  I'm on the FREEWAY!

Oh--and my apologies to the white car I came six inches from side swiping and to the dozens of 18 wheelers who honked at me!

2:00 p.m. Setting up for the "photos" segment.

Basically, it's just me, looking at a bunch of photos from when I am younger...and these are real photos from my childhood.  So many dance recitals in all those crazy costumes.  One with me and my little sister just waking up (bed head!) and another of us with Santa (the REAL one!).  There's one of a tea party...and one with my childhood friend, Pooh.

It's really chilly in the shade...I'm glad I have my pink robe!

Diary... Day Two

We get an early start Sunday, but have to wait for the sun to burn off a little of the haze.  The scene is me walking on the beach, with Sophia dancing and playing.  I'm freezing and she's splashing in the water!  Oops...Sophia slips and gets entirely soaked... she doesn't seem to mind.

In the song, Sophia represents that uninhibited and joyful young soul that I'm wanting to rediscover within myself--and as I watch her this weekend, it makes me smile because she really IS like that!  So carefree and sweet.

After lunch (and getting hassled by park authorities) we move to shoot our final segments.  I have to say goodbye to my sweet little friend, Sophia.  (But I don't doubt that she'll soon be making the move to LA herself and I'll get to see her a lot!)

While the band sets up, the director shoots some really cool footage of me in an almost surrealistic field.

Then, the shot opens up to the band, set up beside some train tracks on a bluff overlooking the ocean.  It feels like a dream, performing in this fantastic and beautiful place with my new friends.  We shoot until way after the sun goes down.  Our crew was TERRIFIC!

Then....it's a wrap.  We're all exhausted.  Beyond exhausted...but we don't really want it to be over.  It's a long drive back to Los Angeles, though and we all get on the road.

(But not before the entire band decides to have one last meal together at this terrific little Mexican restaurant!)

Stay tuned...I'll be posting two videos soon:

The Making of the Band and also

The Making of Mirror Music Video!

We're shooting at a gorgeous private home north of Santa Barbara.  (Many, many thanks, Klaus!) After the photos scene, my friend, Sophia, gets some camera time.  She flew all the way out from Atlanta to be in my video--she is a DOLL!

The setting is spectacular.  The bench is set on a cliff, overlooking the Pacific.  The sun is starting to set, giving everything a warm golden pink glow.

Our last scene of the day is set around a bonfire on the beach, featuring several of my friends including Raja, Tasha, Ben, Jordan, Benji and Jenna, as well as band members Jannette, Mike, Beau and Allen.

My dog, Dodger, helps keep me warm!
