Do you really, really want it?

I work with hundreds of kids and young adults each, many of whom ask me about pursuing a career
in the performing arts.
Some of these kids--- a surprising number, in fact--- may actually have
the talent to succeed on the stage or in tv/film.

But, talent is not the only ingredient necessary for success.  I would venture to say that training
and drive are equally as important.  In fact, I think that drive, dedication and ambition are
the basic prerequisites for pursuing a career after community theatre.
 And, at least while
you are young, it is the drive and dedication of your parents, too.

So, to those of you who truly want to pursue this, can you honestly answer YES to all of these
statements?
--I am continually auditioning and performing in shows.
--I am consistently performing to the utmost of my ability.
--I am constantly researching for acting tips, reading scripts, etc.
--I am working on monologues, songs, other audition materials for the future.
--I cannot imagine working in another profession.
--I read the Stars board each and every day and am an
active participant on the boards.
--I have a current resume on my computer that I update regularly.
--I have a current headshot done by a professional photographer.
--I doing everything that I can right now to make my dream come true.
--I am taking dance, voice and/or acting lessons.
--My parents are supportive of my career goals.

If you answered YES to all of these, try some of the ones below....
--I go to dance class even when I am tired or have a better offer.
--I go to voice lessons even when I don't have an audition coming up.
--I go to every rehearsal ready to work, ready to give 100%.
--I am, right now, reading a book that will help my career.  (acting methods, cold readings, etc.)
--I actively seek workshops and other learning opportunities.
--I know my weaknesses as well as my strengths and am working on improving them.
--I surround myself with others who have similar goals.
--I look for performance opportunities for myself and for the Stars Troupe.

And, finally, for the truly dedicated:
--I have a written "game plan" for my life, with career goals and steps to achieve them.
--I would chose rehearsing over the seeing the latest flick or going to Six Flags.
--I am totally focused on my own career, I do not allow negative thoughts about others to interfere
with my aspirations.  I do not gossip or bash others because I know that this only brings down my own
standards.
--I am currently taking classes/workshops/whatever in my weakest area (improv? cold reading?) and I
will constantly put myself on the line to become better at it.
--I have a comedic and a straight monologue ready to go.
--I have a variety of songs in different genres ready to be sung for a casting committee.
--I am actively searching the internet, newspapers, trade journals, etc. for casting opportunities and
workshops.
--I am growing my list of contacts, constantly making friends and meeting people in the business.  I
send thank you notes to people who have helped me.  I regularly attend gatherings where I can
network.
--I am willing and able to attend workshops or classes or perform in a show without my friends or
family.
--I have a professional, legitimate agent and/or a manager and/or I am attending an accredited
performing arts school.

Now, I don't think that I know of anyone in our community who has reached all of these goals....but I
do know that some of you are working hard on them.
